Why Trauma Wellness

Healing that includes the body

I'm Amy Dilworth, founder of Trauma Wellness. Dance was my first language. I started ballet at three, earned a B.S. in Dance Education, taught dance and performed in community theatre. A music therapist I met in a show helped me see how movement and therapy could work together, and I went on to earn an M.S. in Community Agency Counseling.

In my first counseling job in 1997, I learned about Bessel van der Kolk's brain imaging research. He found that long-term trauma shrinks the hippocampus, which moves memories from short-term to long-term storage, and enlarges the amygdala, where fight, flight and freeze begin. His later work, and that of other trauma specialists, showed that the body keeps the score of trauma, so healing has to include the body too.

In 2022 I opened Trauma Wellness to make room for that kind of healing, with counseling offices and a large room for movement, art, play and sandtray work.

We'll meet you where you are, even in fight, flight or freeze, and help you learn to regulate your emotions and find healthier ways to cope.
